SODA: Embracing the Art Deco Vibe at London’s Soho District Boulevard Theatre

Boulevard Theatre, a new addition to the heart of Soho, London, has recently been completed. Designed by SODA Architects, this theater is part of the Walkers Court project and aims to honor Soho’s rich entertainment heritage. Once a nightlife hotspot in London, SODA Architects have now transformed it into a rotating theater that blends modern technology with Art Deco design.

After thoughtful design, this compact space has transformed into an elegant and refined area. The hall features horizontally arranged leather seats that can be folded up, with seats and stands capable of rotating, and a stage that can be raised or lowered at will. The dark blue wall panels surrounding the stage are staggered to improve acoustics. Performers particularly appreciate the dressing rooms with windows, which include a birch-faced makeup table with a fold-up top revealing a mirror beneath. All railings in the theater are covered in leather hand-sewn by the same artisan.

The bar’s Art Deco style is evident in its white marble counter, corrugated glass, and pink walls. The restrooms are also beautifully decorated, featuring built-in mirrors adorned with rose patterns and cabinet doors finished with warm rosewood veneer, adding a vintage touch to the space. Russell Potter, the manager of SODA, stated: “Through these Art Deco decorations, we aim to recreate the decadence of the 1920s, reminiscent of the allure of nightlife in London’s West End and the birth of the Jazz Age.”

Architects teamed up with theater consultancy Charcoalblue to design a flexible space that can be reconfigured for multiple events in one day. The ground floor is cantilevered over the walkway below, maximizing seating capacity. A glass “bridge” connects the theater and bar.
